Psalm 103: There Are Great Benefits For Those Who Love and Fear The Lord. Jesus said “I Love My Father and My father Loves Me”. He also said: If you Love Me obey Me and walk in My will.
Did Jesus have fear concerning God The Father? No. So why did the psalmist David write: for those who fear The Lord God there is great blessings? What kind of fear was David talking about? Was it the fear one experiences when their conscious says don’t do that? Is it the fear one experiences when guilt of behavior weighs heavy on their soul, their mind, their heart? Is it the fear that one experiences when dealing with a dilemma of what one should do concerning a direction one should go in? Is the fear of impending judgement when one has been caught in a dilemma, a sin or a crime and they are facing justice? Or all the above?
I remember when I was 7 years old we were camping at the lake, we had just showered and put on clean clothes. My dad said: do not go down to the lake and play in the water, we’re going to leave and get something to eat and I don’t want you getting dirty again. So my brothers walked down to the peer and I followed. There was a row boat tied to the peer and I wanted to get into it. I wasn’t playing in the water so I thought it was ok. When I put my foot on the edge of the boat it moved away from the peer and I fell in the water. Un be known to me there was a water snake under the peer and it was moving toward me. My brother reached in and pulled me out of the water just in time. I was in shock and I knew I was in for it. I ran back to the camp in tears where my step mother tried to comfort me. Headed toward me was my dad with a different type consoling in mind. Switch in hand he started to spank me. So I ran in fear of getting a whipping. He got me a couple times as I heard the words: what did I tell you boys?
The fear of The Lord that David is talking about concerns disobeying The Word of The Lord.
As a seven year old child had I not rationalized everything by the lake was Ok just as long as I didn’t get dirty or go into the water. As long as I didn’t get dirty or wet everything would be Ok. But in reality, had I fully understood what my dad was telling me and stayed away from the lake all together I would not have found myself in the water then at the end of a switch receiving discipline, a spanking, for disobeying my dad. God chastises those He loves. It’s a part of His Mercy to us who love Him.
Psalm 103: 11-18 is how The Lord God helps us to walk in a reverent fear that put into our hearts and conscious we don’t want to do anything that is not pleasing to The Lord. But God in His great mercy knows our frame and that we are but dust.
(KJV) Psalm103:11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. 13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him. 14 For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. 15 As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. 16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. 17 But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children; 18 To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.
(RSV) Psalm 103:11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; If we love God and fellowship with Him He will pour out His blessings on us.
12 as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
And when we make mistakes and go before Him and repent He will forgive our sins.
13 As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear him.
When we try to do the right thing and fail He has pity on us and uses our failures as teaching moments to help us become stronger in the things of God.
14 For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.
When we disobey He knows our frame and expects us to come to Him for forgiveness and help
15 As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field;
Our time is short and we have to make the best of it while we wait for the glorious day of The Lord
16 for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more.
Everything is going to burn up in the end when we enter in The Eternal Reign and those who stay steadfast in relationship with The Lord God Almighty who is Father God and His One True Son Jesus The Christ and walk in the truth of The Holy Spirit will have the blessings of verse 17 and 18
17 But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon those who fear HIM, and HIS righteousness to children’s children, 18 to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments.
Didn’t Jesus say in John’s Gospel Chapter 14: If you Love ME obey ME?
19 The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all. 20 Bless the Lord, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word, hearkening to the voice of his word! 21 Bless the Lord, all his hosts, his ministers that do his will! 22 Bless the Lord, all his works, in all places of his dominion, Bless the Lord, O my soul!
“Walk in obedience to My will for all things shall be added unto you both in heaven and on the earth. With God there is always a way forward. “Nothing is impossible with God.“
