Isaiah prophesied concerning the ministry of The Lord Jesus and proclaimed “The Favorable Year Of The Lord” was coming to the afflicted.
There were so many hurting people during The Lord’s time as there is now. The Lord gave us an example in Isaiah 61:1-3 of what the afflicted should expect from God’s anointed one, Jesus; and His ministry.
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; 3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.
Luke’s gospel gives us an amazing example of God fulfilling His promised blessing to women who had suffered for 12 years.
Luke 8:43-48 (NRSV) Your Faith Has Made You Well; Go In Peace
43 Now there was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years; and though she had spent all she had on physicians, no one could cure her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his clothes, and immediately her hemorrhage stopped. 45 Then Jesus asked, “Who touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and press in on you.” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; for I noticed that power had gone out from me.” 47 When the woman saw that she could not remain hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before him, she declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”
How can one today receive the blessing like the woman with an issue of blood? God made a way for all humanity. And the forth coming scriptures give us a picture of God’s plan and Love for His creation. A Savior will be born. He will carry the sins of the world on His body where He will die, hung a cross, to save and heal the afflicted.
I) Jesus Knew Exactly What His Life Would Be Like And He Came Anyway
Isaiah 53 (NRSV)
53:1 Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by others; a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity; and as one from whom others hide their faces he was despised, and we held him of no account.
II) He Knew How He Was Going To Suffer And Why And He Came Anyway
4 Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. 5
A) But he was wounded for our transgressions;
B) He was crushed for our iniquities
C) upon him was the punishment that made us whole
D) and by his bruises we are healed
III) Even Though We Are All Sinners And Don’t Deserve His Sacrifice He Came Anyway
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
HE WENT TO THE CROSS FOR US!
7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. 8 By a perversion of justice he was taken away; Who could have imagined his future? For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people? 9 And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.
IV) God So Loved Us, The World, And He Sent Jesus To Save And Heal Us
10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him with pain; When you make his life an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days; through him the will of the Lord shall prosper. 11 Out of his anguish he shall see light; he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge. The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressor, yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
Jesus Loved Us So Much He Freely Gave Himself In Obedience To God’s Will So We Could Have Eternal Life! And In That Blessing, Every Promise Of God’s Blessings Are Ours Because Jesus Was Obedient Unto Death; God Had A Plan
V) Jesus Will Rise With Healing In His Wings
In Closing: Easter Sunday is March 27. We celebrate the death and resurrection of Lord and Savior. Did you know, from 4BC to 1791AD there were 15 people claiming to be the Messiah. What separates Jesus from the lot? His resurrection, 2.184 billion Christians and a plethora of recorded data through out history giving testimony to the miracle working power that Jesus Christ is Lord. Had Jesus not been resurrected He would have been recorded in history as just an other crazy man claiming to be the Messiah.
The ministry of The Lord Jesus did not end at the cross. On the contrary, it was just beginning in a more powerful way.
The heavens proclaimed “The Favorable Year Of The Lord” and it hasn’t ended. When Jesus was resurrected He ascended into heaven the anointed was passed onto the Apostles, the Lord’s disciples, the church by The Holy Spirit.
The Isaiah 61:1-3 prophecy wasn’t singular for Jesus. It also concerned His Body; the body of Christ, who The Lord commanded to believe for and expect the promises written in God’s word. And just as in Jesus’ time the power of God is promised to be made manifest today. That’s correct, it is God’s loving promise to us, and that promise was sealed through His suffering servant on the cross. And because The Lord Jesus has risen and ascended into heaven He promised His body would be empowered by The Holy Spirit to continue in His ministry unto the glory of God.
Application: There are so many hurting in the world today. We in the body of Christ are supposed to be The Lord’s hands extended to a hurting world. Simple acts of faith in prayer have moved mountains. The above scriptures remind us what we can expect from The Holy Spirit.
Isaiah 61:1-3 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; 3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.
That same anointing is upon us today; it is the Passion Of The Christ and empowered by The Holy Spirit. It’s why He died on the cross for us.
