Intro: My Baptism In The Holy Spirit Experience, video testimony.

I) The prophetic word’s of John the Baptist and the commandments of Jesus Christ Our Lord concerning the Baptism of The Holy Spirit.

A) The Baptism In The Holy Spirit is a cardinal doctrine of scripture, a cardinal doctrine to the body of Christ. As we press into the Word it states the following:

The first account I composed, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when He was taken up to heaven, after He had by The Holy Spirit given orders to the apostles whom He had chosen. To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God.

B) There are seven very direct scripture passages telling us what The Lord’s will is concerning His expectations about the Baptism in The Holy Spirit. Please note, this commandment of Christ is very distinct and separate from the regeneration blessing where Jesus breathed onto His disciples to opened their minds to understand the scriptures. At this point of enlightenment to His truths concerning scripture they received the understanding that led to their salvation. Just prior to His ascension, Jesus spoke to His followers.

Acts 1:4-7 Gathering them together, He (JESUS) commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

In The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John the bible states John the baptizer prophesied concerning the baptism of The Holy Spirit.

Matthew 3:11 “As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Mark 1:7-8 And he was preaching, and saying, “After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals. I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

Luke 3:16 John answered and said to them all, “As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

John 1:33 John testified saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33 I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

Please note: The Baptism in The Holy Spirit had not happened yet.

Luke 24: 48-49 Jesus said: “You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

Acts 1:4-5 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Acts 1:6-8 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority;

but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

II. Humility and obedience to God bring blessing; but, disobedient sacrifice is a sin.

I Samuel 15:22-23 Samuel said, “Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices As in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. 23 “For rebellion is as the sin of divination, And insubordination is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He has also rejected you from being king.”

Just as Isaiah 61:1-3 and Zechariah 4:6, the Prophet Joel prophesied concerning a powerful new blessing of God The Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:16 but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel: 17 ‘And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit On All mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions,

And your old men shall dream dreams; 18 Even on My bond-slaves, both men and women, I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit And they shall prophesy. 19 ‘And I will grant wonders in the sky above And signs on the earth below, Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. 20 ‘The sun will be turned into darkness And the moon into blood, Before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come. 21 ‘And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

Recap: After the first converts received the blessing of The Holy Spirit for enlightenment unto salvation when Jesus breathed on them, Jesus said, there is more, go, pray and wait for it.

III) On The Day of Pentecost, The Holy Spirit Manifested His Powerful Presence

Acts 2 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.

Why does God bless us with signs and wonders?

People Wonder:

The First Sign

2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

The Second Sign

And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.

600TonguesAsOfFire

The Third Sign

The gift of tongues is the first initial sign manifested and recorded when the Baptism of The Holy Spirit blessed the believer’s lives. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.

C) Other signs the baptism has occurred in a believers life are super natural boldness and power accompanied by His manifest glory to complete the mighty works of Christ.

What are these powerful signs for?

First, To get people’s attention, to glorify God through the preaching of the “Good News”.

Acts 2:5 Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven. And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language. They were amazed and astonished, saying, “Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans?

Acts 2:8-12 And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born? Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God.” 12 And they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”

And Secondly, The Holy Spirit will also bless a personal need in the believer’s life that God’s Holy Spirit rests upon.

13 But others were mocking and saying, “They are full of sweet wine.” The disciples until this blessing were deeply grieved at the loss of Jesus yet hopeful because they saw Him resurrected and ascending into heaven. The scripture reveals what heaven is like, and, when heaven is made manifest on earth heavens blessings become experiential in the believers life.

Romans 14:17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

When God manifests His presence people humble themselves in His presence and fall to their faces

Genesis 15:12, God put Abram into a deep sleep. God then prophesied or spoke the future over Abram’s resting spirit.

Genesis 17:3, 17 Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying

Deuteronomy 9:18 “I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and nights

Ezekiel 1:28 This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. So when I saw it, I fell on my face.

Matthew 17:1–6  When the disciples heard that, they fell to the ground with faces down. They were terrified and totally overwhelmed by both the words of the revelation and the way it was delivered. Jesus touched them and reassured them gently.

John 18:4–6 So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and *said to them, “Whom do you seek?” 5 They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He *said to them, “I am He.” And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them. 6 So when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

Acts 9:3-5 A blinding light from heaven appeared and seized Saul. He heard a voice from heaven and fell to the ground blinded. His fellow travelers also heard the voice but saw nothing except Saul’s response and blindness: “Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’ And he said, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And the Lord said, ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting’”

Outpourings and revivals past have recorded the phenomenon of being overwhelmed by The Holy Spirit. Weeping, crying, falling out, staggering, rolling, great joy, laughter, giddiness under the power of The Holy Spirit; some have referred to this as spiritual awakenings.

John Wesley (1703-91) visit this link http://www.danielrjennings.org/tsoojw2.pdf for this wonderful book, 219 pages about Wesley’s experiences during the Great Awakening: THE SUPERNATURAL OCCURRENCES OF JOHN WESLEY,; Daniel R. Jennings

Jonathan Edwards, the main instrument and theologian of the Great Awakening in America (1725–1760), said in his Account of the Revival of Religion in North Hampton in 1740–42: . . . many in their religious affections being raised far beyond what they had ever had before: and there were some instances of persons lying in a sort of trance, remaining perhaps for a whole twenty-four hours motionless, and with their senses locked up; but in the meantime under strong imaginations, as though they went to heaven, and had there a vision of glorious and delightful objects.

Charles Finney (1792–1875) was one of the most powerful revivalists since the Reformation stated: when all at once an awful solemnity seemed to settle down upon them; the congregation began to fall from their seats in every direction, and cried for mercy. If I had had a sword in each hand, I could not have cut them off their seats as fast as they fell. Indeed nearly the whole congregation were either on their knees or prostrate, I should think, in less than two minutes from this first shock that fell upon them. Every one prayed for himself, who was able to speak at all.

“God does exactly what He wants to do. His ways are not our ways, but we know that He does all things well!”

“In every case, Jesus accomplishes a deeper work in the believer. He may perform surgery; heal your body; prophesy; give a promise; speak a strange word out of your mouth; send an angel; give instruction, correction, or deliverance; or call you to a new ministry. Whatever He does is communication from the Spirit of God to the spirit of man—Spirit-to-spirit contact. This bypasses your mind, will, emotions, thoughts, carnal desires, limitations, and demonic strongholds” pastor Ron Phillips.

D) Other signs and prophetic utterances

Acts 2:15 For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day; 16 but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel: 17 ‘And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams; 18 Even on My bond-slaves, both men and women, I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit And they shall prophesy. 19 ‘And I will grant wonders in the sky above And signs on the earth below, Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. 20 ‘The sun will be turned into darkness And the moon into blood, Before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come. 21 ‘And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

IV) The Baptism in The Holy Spirit is not just for the Apostles or the first disciples, God’s blessings are for everyone because the Great Commission is a mandate to everyone.

Acts 4:29 And now, Lord, take note of their threats, and grant that Your bond-servants may speak Your word with all confidence, 30 while You extend Your hand to heal, and signs and wonders take place through the name of Your holy servant Jesus.” 31 And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.

Acts 6:7-8 The word of God kept on spreading; and the number of the disciples continued to increase greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were becoming obedient to the faith. And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and signs among the people.

Acts 10:44-48 While Peter was still speaking these words, The Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. 45 All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered,

47 “Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?” 48 And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days.

Acts 19:6 It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples. He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “Into John’s baptism.” Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying. There were in all about twelve men.

Recap:

  1. The Baptism In The Holy Spirit is a cardinal doctrine of scripture
  2. A commandment of Christ that is distinct and separate from regeneration, the salvation blessing of being sealed unto redemption
  3. The gift of tongues was the first initial sign the Baptism in The Holy Spirit had occurred in the believer’s life
  4. Other signs that accompany the Baptism are: personal boldness and power accompanied by His manifest glory to complete the mighty works Christ
  5. Further signs that accompany the Baptism are: prophetic utterances, declarations of praise, enhanced sensitivity to sin that grieves The Holy Spirit, seeking deeper righteousness and visions
  6. The gifts of The Holy Spirit as recorded in:

I Corinthians 12: 4-13 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. 12 For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and I will forgive their sin and heal their land.
